The Engineering Quarter at Loughborough campus has gradually dimmed, with the mural beneath the Sir David Davies Building underpass losing its prominence. This proposal introduces a light based intervention that restores atmosphere to this threshold. Focusing on the campus’s international student community, particularly those from China and India, the design draws on cultural traditions centred on light. Inspired by Chinese lanterns, steel rails trace the wiring, framing the translucent shoji-like façade to create a monumental lantern effect. Referencing the immersive qualities of Aukio at Helsinki Vantaa Airport, a wraparound LED installation creates a calming plaza of light, sound and shared experience that reminds them of home.
